  • A disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus and can be found on the ovaries, tubes, intestines, bladder or other pelvic organs.
  • Painful periods, painful intercourse, pain with bowel movement or urination, excessive bleeding and infertility.

Diagnosis:

Treatment:

Medical Management

  • Pain medication
  • Hormone therapy – OCP, Progestins, GnRH, agonists

Surgical Management

  • Conservative laparoscopic surgery in patients trying to become pregnant.
  • Hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries in older patients who have finished their family.

ART

  • As endometriosis is a chronic progressive condition which can impair fertility it is advisable that patients seek fertility treatments and try to conceive as early as possible.

Embryo refers to the early stage of growth and differentiation of an organism after fertilization till the 8th week when the fetal period begins.

Stages of embryo development in IVF

  • Fertilization is visible approximately 17 to 18 hours later with the development of two round bodies called pronuclei in the centre of the egg
  • 30 hours- from fertilization, the now fertilized egg will divide producing a two cell embryo.
  • Day 2 – four cell embryo stage
  • Day 3 – eight cell embryo stage
  • Day 4 – morula or ball of cells
  • Day 5 – blastocyst
