“A woman can get pregnant any time”
We all have fallen for this statement! Haven’t we? While many of us got aware, some are still out there thinking a woman can get pregnant any time, after sexual intercourse.
While the above statement is 100% myth, the real fact is a woman is said to be most fertile or can only get pregnant within 1-2 days of her ovulation. Ovulation is when a mature egg gets released from the ovary. This most fertile period in a woman’s life is also known as ‘Fertile Window’.
WHAT IS FERTILE WINDOW?
As already mentioned, the fertile window is the only time-period within which a couple can conceive. While this is true, one should also note that this window depends and varies for each woman.
Stop smoking and substance abuse
It is a well-known fact that smoking is injurious to health, which also affects fertility, both in men and women. Smoking can be a major reason for infertility, and impotency. Ideally, one should stop smoking before trying to have a baby, to improve the chances of conceiving. Smoking can also damage the DNA of your baby. Pregnant women who smoke are at a high risk of serious complications.
WHEN DOES THE EGG RELEASE DURING OUR MONTHLY CYCLE?
If a woman has a regular monthly cycle i.e., if her periods occur regularly with a gap of 30 days, then the egg will release around the middle of the month. If the cycle is for 30 days, you should calculate the first day of your periods as ‘day 1’, and around ‘day 14’ or ‘day 15’, the egg releases.
One can only assume, and cannot pinpoint one particular day as such for ovulation as these depend and vary according to each woman. Hence from 10 – 20 days of periods, couples should maintain proper physical contact, more often as possible as chances for pregnancy are better during these days. You can still be together or in physical contact before or after ovulation, it is not like it will lead to abortion or anything but ovulation time is very important. This is because the male reproductive cell, sperm, can live inside a woman’s body for 3 – 4 days. But an egg once released has a lifespan of only 24 hours. That is why for a successful pregnancy, contact during this particular time is crucial.
If you are someone who gets irregular periods or late periods (periods if that happen between 45 days, 60 days, or 90 days); there is a chance that ovulation may happen late or might not happen at all. We cannot tell the accurate calculations of time-period in such scenarios.
So if you are trying for a baby, make sure to have regular sex, at least 3 – 4 times in a week.
HOW TO TRACK OVULATION?
A woman’s body undergoes a lot of changes during her cycle. Your body will definitely show some signs of ovulation. If you properly examine your body, one can notice that there will be a change in the vaginal mucus – a bit slippery and clear. This is our body’s way of showing that it is an apt time for sexual intercourse as sperms can travel easily in this case.
There are also many ovulation calculators, apps available, etc., that can help you track your most fertile time.
