Menstruation, also known as menses, periods, menstrual cycle, etc., is the normal vaginal bleeding that occurs every month.
Even though menstruation is a natural part of a woman’s reproductive cycle, it is still a taboo topic that is rarely discussed. Many girls and women, especially in developing countries do not get proper access to menstrual hygiene management, information, or facilities.
Menstrual hygiene is a hygiene practice that protects women from infections in their reproductive and urinary tracts while they are menstruating. - Wash yourself properly

This not only keeps bacteria and infection at bay but also helps to avoid unpleasant odour down there. When it comes to washing, how you are washing is equally crucial! Make sure you are washing‘from vagina to anus’, as washing the other way around (from anus to vagina) can lead to unnecessary transmission of unwanted organisms such as bacteria.
- Maintain separate underwear
It is advisable to maintain and use separate underwear during those days of the month. It is highly unhygienic to use and be in stained underwear. In case of any stain, make sure to wash and disinfect it right away!
- Practice one sanitation method at a time
Women who experience heavier flow tend to use two sanitary pads, pads with clothes, tampons with pads, etc. Even though this may help you with your flow, this isn’t the correct or healthy way to do it. Two sanitation methods at the same time not only absorb more blood, but also invite bacteria and infections in your vaginal area ( since you won’t be replacing them frequently). Some people even end up developing Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) in the long run.
- Discard properly
Last but not least, make sure to properly wrap used sanitary pads with a newspaper before discarding them in order to stop bacteria and infections from spreading.
